Mailbox Maintenance: Touch Up Paint

Centralized mailboxes are convenient and easy to use for mail delivery and pickup. They are also very useful for delivering packages safely and quickly and help to save trips to the post office with their features. They are also sturdy and resistant to weathering, thanks to their paint and powder finish.

However, it’s always possible that damage can occur, such as cuts, key dings, and vandalism. Perhaps graffiti has appeared on your mailbox, and it is difficult to wash off. In these cases, you may want to invest in a bit of touch-up paint. Damage can also occur over time.

Prepare the Area

Before you want to touch up an area on your mailbox, you’ll need to take some simple preparation steps to avoid paint flaking or incorrect drying.

  • First, clean the area with a gentle cloth and a cleaner such as Simple Green.
  • Order the touch-up paint from an approved dealer, such as the one that manufactures your centralized mailbox. Using other types of paint will not get the desired look. Ensure that you order your touch-up from the correct dealer so that the colors will match.
  • Your touch-up paint will arrive as a narrow tube with a tip.
  • Once you have your paint, shake it up to ensure it’s not separated, and to get an even color. Then wait about five minutes.

Applying the Paint

Now that you’re prepared, it is time to apply the paint.

  • Using the flat tip, apply pressure on the needed surface until paint appears.
  • Once the tip is covered in paint, you may begin dabbing the area that requires a touch-up.
  • The best practice is to swipe and apply the paint in thin layers, to get an even look.
  • The paint may appear lighter or darker than your desired color at first but waiting a few minutes for it to dry will ensure that it becomes the correct color.
